This week we cover, Nepo babies, my love for the Neptunes and my controversial hot take (UGGS!!) of the week in the short form series ‘Stop the madness’.
The Art of Being A Nepo Baby
A forgotten art form…
A couple weeks back Brooklyn Beckham was ridiculed by a large portion of the internet for his latest job title. When asked by Daniel Mac what he does for a living, he proudly uttered that he’s a Chef. For those unfamiliar with Daniel, he’s the guy who asks rich people in LA what they do to afford driving around 5 mortgages in the form of an automobile. As the oldest child of the Beckham clan, Brooklyn has had his fair share of occupations. I mean when you have all that money, the world is your bloody oyster! I won’t be dissecting his illustrious career journey but I will urge you to explore his work of art, ‘What I See: Brooklyn Beckham’, in your own time.
Brooklyn’s blunder made me think of my favourite Nepo babies who just get ‘it’. From the undoubtable household names who are embedded into pop culture as we know it, to the lowkey ones who have the most well curated Instagram you have ever seen.
To truly start the deep dive into some of the most adored Nepo babies, we must pay respects to one of the originals. America’s sweetheart, Drew Barrymore, has been on our screens for decades. Her movie debut was at the tender age of six years old as Gertie in Spielberg’s classic E.T. She is part of the Barrymore Dynasty, a long established family of actors in Hollywood. Like most Hollywood starlets, Drew has been through her fair share of ups and downs. Drew resonates so much with me because she’s slightly up their with the fairies. Her dancing in the rain and having a mini speech about hope after finding a hidden window in her new house whilst renovating, is all very me. Plus black people just love Drew Barrymore.
A new-age household name is Bella Hadid, Palestinian supermodel and all round fashion icon. Having a former model as your mother probably helps your chances with breaking into the industry. Side-note, Y*landa is trifling. Bella and Gigi emerged onto the scene at the same time as the likes of Kendall Jenner. Bella is seemingly a crowd favourite and reveered in high fashion twitter. What’s not to like? She can actually walk and her editorials give us more to work with than the other Nepo model girls. Bella’s personal fashion and her outspokenness regarding social issues also sets her apart. Lastly, Bella and her boyfriend just prance around New York looking all sorts of strange, and I adore it.
Now onto the lowkey girls, the one’s you come across on social media who seem so organically well connected but slightly elusive. One quick google and boom you find out that they have their own wikipedia page. Better than that, both of their parents have a blue hyperlink!
Actress and socialite, Temi Otedola is very much that for me. To most of the Nigerian population, the name Otedola should make dollar bills immediately flash in your head - better yet Naira. Temi’s father, Femi Otedola is a well-known Nigerian business man and former chairman of Forte Oil PLC. Temi’s late grandfather was also a formidable name, as a former Governor of Lagos State. In short, the money is long. As an OG fashion blogger babe - JTOFashion.com, if you know you know - Temi has been known for the looks. It’s so satisfying when people with money don’t dress terribly. Whether in Alexander McQueen or Miscreants London, Temi knows what she’s doing.
Iris Law, Jude Law and Sadie Frost’s daughter, is also in the same hemisphere of lowkey. Friends with fellow Nepo baby, Emilia Boateng, Iris’ irridescent fairy like demeanour is incredibly charming. Her instagram is essentially a moodboard for London girls who wear Sambas and ankle length denim skirts. It seems like Iris showcases more of her personality on TikTok (Iris__law), from her baking pastries to taking us to the beach in one of her mini vlogs. I’m here for all of it.
We’ve covered a few of my favourite Nepo darlings in this first edition of Beware of Withholding. I feel like that’s enough of talking about people who have inherited their wealth through birth, they dress cute though!
Playlist of the week: A Neptunes Muse
Pharrell is lowkey as trifling as Diddy in some respects, but he sure knows how to make a hit for the girls. Listen to my favourite Neptune’s tracks and some other gems below.
Stop The Madness: Ultra Mini Uggs
As part of the newsletter, I will be sharing a hot take in a series called ‘Stop the madness’. 2-3 sentences, no further explanation. Straight to the point.
The internet has in many instances sneakily disarmed me and wore me down. However, those ultra mini uggs (and mid Jordans) are where I put my foot down!
They’re terrible, that’s it.
